Welcome to Mrs. Burnham’s 7th grade technology class. With more than 30 years working in education: junior high schools, high school, and community colleges; currently a CTE student aiming for the CTC Designated Subjects Career Technical Education Credential, in Communication and Information Technology at CSUSB. A former Computer Media Specialist and Help Desk Technician, she loves to help students learn and solve problems using technology.

As a teacher of 7th grade ELL students, pedagogical instruction is followed in this lesson to change computer system default language. Students utilize Google Translate, if necessary. Classroom demographics include a majority of Hispanic and Latina students, with a minority of Iranian and Pilipino. At times, andragogy is applied in this class as students like to have a say in what they choose to learn.

Students use Dell PCs in a LAN classroom, with keyboards, speakers, and Internet access for their Google student email accounts. Entire class is ELL intermediate level with Internet experience on classroom PCs, including email and social media. Language demands exposure to higher level technology skills and language use to improve English language skill.

In class, ELL SDAIE method is applied for CTE, using Windows 10 Operating System on Dell PC computers on LAN, and Google Translate audio with speakers. Students perform the writing component of the lesson by sending an email in their default computer language, then reset default computer language back to English and send another email to verify tasks when competently completed.

Our class introduces and explores computer operating systems, coding, cybersecurity, digital citizenship, logic, problem solving, and writing. We have fun with blogging, coding, comics, robotics, social media, and creating eBooks, in line with the California State Standards for Common Core 7th grade technology.
